Globalization has contributed to new academic
interest in CSR. Globalization has also added a dimension of
ethical marketing in business. The forces of globalization,
rapid technological improvements and precipitous changes in
business climate have introduced considerable confusion over
exactly what is – and is not – expected of businesses. The
boundaries of responsibility for the corporations are
questioned, particularly in relation to government. We find
no clear answers – much depends on the political, cultural
and historical context and driven by big interest groups.
Many issues contend the expansive growth of the area;
however, this knowledge of CSR grows without clarity,
direction or universally accepted norms and systems of
operation.
CSR has gained strong global currency and has
been consistently promoted as a marketing tool. All
corporations claim that they are acting responsibly,
managing eco-friendly production processes and running
operations with justice and equity. They contend on working
towards good governance, incorporating elements of corporate
responsibility for building social capital and
sustainability. Global aspirations of corporations are being
subverted by citizens’ groups who have wizened to understand
that sustainability issues are not essential drivers for
corporate attitude and that people’s organizations have thus
sprung up to counter this new corporate avarice with or
without reason.
Not all corporate activities give reason to
believe that sustainable issues have been undermined and,
therefore, CSR is at stake, needing redress of the decision.
CSR scope in reality should not be a ‘counter active action’
but rather a ‘pro-active action.’ At IITM, we extend our
hands for taking such partnership forward.
Globalization has also created scope for new
legal frameworks to be introduced and capacity developed
within the judicial cadre to ensure proper dispensation of
laws pertaining to CSR. Since parliamentarians are the
policy giving body in Bangladesh, CSR’s legal framework must
be developed and enacted as the laws of the land. Similarly,
the administrative and law enforcement cadre must also be
mobilized through proper training as to CSR issues and laws.
At IITM, we can also work with various universities and
research organs to promote CSR in a meaningful way for
bettering the positioning of Bangladeshi organizations
globally. We engage our services for building general
awareness across organizations and Government entities by
introducing CSR and its scope for the country.
